If you’re looking for the ultimate Drakensberg adventure activities, this Canopy Tour is at the top of the list. The forested tour is a stunning piece of the Drakensberg that’s well worth a visit.

Clouds over the Drakensberg

Enter the aptly-named Rabbit Hole and take a trip through the treetops of the Blue Grotto forest in Central Drakensberg. Under the gaze of Cathkin Peak, this stunning forest is the ultimate ziplining playground.

After a safety briefing, you will begin your experience with an open-topped drive to the course. Then it’s time for the ride of a lifetime. The tour includes 12 slides, each with their own fascinating story and unique pathway through the forest.

The guides are exceptionally knowledgeable and will give you fascinating insight into the environment and history of the area.

Forest walk

The course is an excellent blend of cliff face and tree-based platforms, which reach up to 60m in height. The Drakensberg Canopy Tour is also home to Africa’s first elevated rock face walkway, which promises to be amazing.

From your spot in the leafy attics of Yellowwoods and Red Pear trees, you can enjoy a view of the many animals that live in the Drakensberg area. Look out for the local wildlife, including:

  • Mountain reedbuck
  • Grey duiker
  • Eland
  • Porcupines
  • Rock hyrax (dassie)

The Blue Grotto forest is also home to over 150 species of birds, including the very rare Bush Blackcap.

Dassie on a rock

While rain gear can be provided, the best time to visit the Drakensberg without much rain or snow is May as well as July/August. The warmest time to visit is February, but with a fair chance of rain. If you don’t mind getting a bit wet, this is an ideal time to go.

For one of the best activities on offer in the Drakensberg, explore the stunning sights of Giant’s Castle from the treetops.
