santiago chile city view

Vineyards have been making wine in the Santiago region for centuries but only started gaining international recognition after the 1990s. The international recognition came soon after French and United States wineries began investing in Chilean vineyards.

There is a wide variety of grapes grown across Chile, the most commonly grown grape is the cabernet sauvignon. But there is a particular variety, the Carménère, which only grows in Chile. Carménère has a similar taste profile to a Merlot — plum, black cherry, and mild tannin, but it also has earthy undertones of black pepper, bell pepper, and cocoa powder.

The Chilean Carménère is known to grow best in the heart of the country around Santiago. So if you want a truly distinctive experience, filled with good wine and friendly faces, a Santiago wine tasting tour is just the thing for you.

When visiting this region, keep an eye out for vineyards such as the Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, and Undurraga. These wineries are among the region’s most famous and produce some of the best wines Chile has to offer.

Cousiño Macul Half-Day Wine Tasting Tour From Santiago

wine tasting at undurruga winery chile

This two-hour wine tasting tour takes you across the renowned Cousiño Macul vineyard. Your tour begins in the gardens of the vineyard, as you traverse the area your guide points out the grapes that produce the best wines.

From the great outdoors, you enter the winery with the largest wine barrels in the world. These barrels are produced from Chilean oak, with the capacity to hold 8,000 gallons. These oak barrels are no longer in use but are still a considerable part of the vineyard’s history.

Then walk among the massive stainless steel barrels that ferment the wine today, as you head towards the cellar where the bottles are stored. Before the end of the tour, enjoy tasting some of the best wines Cousiño Macul has to offer, with critical tips on what you should taste, see, and smell. Your tour guide explains the key wine pairings, such as scallops go beautifully with a sauvignon blanc and a juicy medium rare steak pairs best with a cabernet sauvignon.

What we liked: Great if you don’t want to spend the whole day at the same vineyard.

INCLUDES:

  • Cousiño Macul vineyard entry ticket
  • Cousiño Macul Museum entry
  • Free Wi-Fi

EXCLUDES:

  • Transportation to and from the vineyard
  • Lunch

The tour includes entry into the vineyards museum, where you can learn more about this iconic winery. Engraved wine glasses make the experience just that much more special. Unfortunately, the tour does not include hotel pick-ups, but a detailed overview of how to get to the venue is provided.

This was an unbelievably good trip! Our tour guide Felipe really went above and beyond – he made us feel completely welcome in his community. The wineries we visited were beautiful, the bike ride tour was charming, but we met incredibly gracious and kind people who made us feel quite at home.

An hour drive outside of Santiago, the grounds were beautiful. Our tour guide and sommelier were fantastic! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars, is because of the time. An afternoon tour would be better…my buddy and I drank 7 glasses of wine before noon (very generous “tastings”). Amazing…but did us in for the rest of the day.

We enjoyed Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, and wine, and it was a great tour with lots of things. Patricio, the guide and driver, was very kind and responded to various questions and requests. There are various wine tastings, and in Valparaiso you can get off at the hills and squares to take a lot of pictures, and Vina del Mar's elegant castle restaurant was for tourists, but it was very delicious. It was good that the event was held as scheduled when the situation in Chile was still unstable, and that we were able to respond carefully to inquiries in advance. The time was on schedule.

They picked us up on time (they took a while but it was because of another passenger). The guide was quite attentive, explained well and waited for us 🙂 If we compare service and price, I think it was fair. Tip: Do not take the tour on a Monday because the Pablo Neruda House Museum is closed on that day. If you go in November, the weather in that area is cold, so pack a coat, because you are close to the silver
