No whale-watching adventure anywhere in the world has ever topped a morning out on Sri Lanka’s waves. It’s in a league of its own!
Once you’ve seen the breathtaking scenery, wild animals, and unforgettable train rides, you might think you’d seen everything Sri Lanka has to offer. But, it’s not nearly all the country has to offer.
Travel down to the southern tip of the island, and you could go whale and dolphin watching too. Read this guide to find the best Mirissa whale watching prices along the Indian Ocean.
PRO TIP: If you’re planning to travel in Sri Lanka, it cannot be emphasised enough how important it is to have decent travel insurance. Be it on a budget or on a luxury tour, especially if you plan to tour by bike or scooter, this will save you a lot of money.

Picking the Right Whale Watching Tour in Sri Lanka
You have to pay a bit more to sit on the top deck, but it’s definitely worth it because the views are better and you can soak in the morning sun. The staff on board are amazing, handing out hot coffee, tea and biscuits to keep our energy levels up. They even hand out sandwiches later in the morning when everyone is feeling peckish.
Expect to see lots of other boats in the harbour, also heading out, that looked totally overcrowded with up to 80 people on board one small boat. For your comfort, pay that bit more by signing up with a responsible whale-watching company, and pay to sit on the top deck!
The boat ride can be quite long but very enjoyable. The captain knows where to find pods of dolphins and, of course, lots of whales. Some groups get luckier than others, seeing an insane amount of dolphins and whales throughout our trip.
What to Keep in Mind When Booking Whale Watching Trips
Not all dolphin and whale-watching tours are designed the same way. Here are a fw things to keep in mind for this Sri Lankan cruise.
Getting seasick
Some people didn’t take to the water very well, despite the ride being very smooth for most travellers. However, if this happens, the boats are fully equipped ot handle this. If you suffer from seasickness or don’t deal well with boat rides, it would be best to take seasickness tablets about an hour before the tour starts.
Blue Whales
The most fun part of whale watching, especially once you’ve spotted a Blue Whale, is those few moments when the whale is swimming underwater, and you can barely make them out. Then you wait, hope, and pray that it will leap up out of the water, splashing its tail as it dives back under.
You’ll spot various whales and even pods. These look like dolphins, but apparently their behaviour is more like that of a large whale.
The blue whale is the largest animal in the world, growing to almost 30 meters long. Their tongue alone can weigh as much as an elephant!. The massive, dark shadow of the Blue Whale beneath the boat usually has all guests scrambling for a closer look.
Dolphins
Dolphin watching is one of the unique things to do in Sri Lanka. It is an amazing experience for your never-ending bucket list.
Dolphins are nearly guaranteed because Sri Lanka’s southern waters off Dondra Point form a rich feeding ground where nutrient upwellings attract their prey. These clever marine mammals always seem to steal the show with their infectious energy, synchronised jumps, and tail slaps.
Weather and Sea Conditions
Weather and sea conditions play a huge role in Sri Lanka’s whale-watching success, especially from Mirissa on the south coast.
Best Time to Book
The tours run best from November to April. During peak season (Dec–Mar), you can expect calm to moderately calm seas in the early mornings. This time is ideal for smooth 3–5-hour rides out to 20km offshore, with bright sun, excellent visibility, and minimal swell for spotting blue whales closer to shore.
Between May and October, you can expect rougher Indian Ocean swells, stronger winds, and monsoon rains that often cancel trips or limit sightings.
Best Whale Watching Companies in Mirissa
The best company to go with is the family-run Raja and The Whales. The tour starts at 6.30 am from Mirissa Harbour, lasts 3-5 hours, and costs 6,500 Rupees per person, about €35 or $40.
Try to get a seat on the top deck, bring some water with you or of course, your camera and the best camera lenses you own!
P.S. Make the most of that sunrise ride to the harbour to snap beautiful sunrise pics.
