Mpumalanga , meaning the place of the rising sun in Zulu, is one of South Africa’s most magnificent locations. You can expect to keep yourself busy with adventure activities, wildlife-watching or exploring the rich, cultural history this part of South Africa has to offer.

Mpumalanga Attractions: The Panorama Route

The Panorama route starts in Nelspruit, leaving its trail through Sabie, Graskop and Pilgrims Rest, and ends at the Swadini Forever Resort. Here you can enjoy boat rides or take a Microlight flight and explore the amazing panoramic views.

Nelspruit

Explore the Sudwala Caves, located close to Nelspruit. The caves are more than 240 million years old, with significant rock formations decorating the floor and ceiling. Or visit the Lowveld Botanical Gardens , one of only nine botanical gardens in South Africa.

Sabie

Next stop, Sabie. Here you can enjoy adventurous activities like abseiling and 4X4 trips. Or visit Africa’s longest Toboggan run around Mpumalanga’s Long Tom Pass mountains. This 1.7 kilometre track runs at 45 kilometres per hour, through the forest – making it a fast, but scenic ride. This might be something different the whole family will enjoy!

The Mac Mac Falls is the perfect place for a picnic. The pools are created naturally by waterfalls in the region – making this a great spot to take a dip in the Lowveld heat. Nothing like some refreshing mountain water on your skin!

Graskop

Graskop is home to some of our favourite natural attractions in Mpumalanga. Visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes – huge potholes carved out by the pebbles swirling around the pools where the Blyde and Treur River meet.

God’s Window is the most magical location, offering panoramic views over the Lowveld. From here you can see the Blyde River Canyon. The canyon can also be enjoyed from different locations. Take a boat trip in the water of the Blyde River or enjoy a hot air balloon ride.

The Genesis Route, Mpumalanga

The Genesis Route connects Baberton to Badplaas – the perfect mix between culture and relaxation. The Genesis route joins the heart of Mpumalanga to the Kruger Lowveld, Swaziland and Mozambique – displaying the beautifully diverse nature of the Lowlands.

The Geotrails at Makhonjwa Mountain is a range of small hills and mountains covering 80% of the province Mpumalanga. The area is known as the ‘Genesis of Life’ – with its extreme age, komatites (unusual type of volcanic rock) and history of gold deposits it is worth a visit if you enjoy the unique preservation of nature.

Kruger National Park: Mpumalanga Wildlife

Kruger National Park deserves a visit! South Africa’s Big 5 can be found here. You can stay in beautiful camps or self accommodation units in the Kruger National Park. Animals can be spotted early in the morning or after dark – which makes staying in the park the ideal solution of you’re on a hunt to spot the Big 5.
