Here’s what you need to know about taking a delightful ferry ride and tour for the day (or for longer).

Tip: While you’re in Argentina, you might also be interested in an Iguaza Falls Tour. And if you want to see a vibrant and intense Tango Show, then there’s no better way to see it than in its birthplace.

Know before you book:

  • You will need your passport, as you are entering a new country.
  • You will also need a reciprocity certificate to re-enter Argentina.
  • Vaccination certificates may still be in effect for COVID19.
  • Prices for ferry tickets may fluctuate and may impact your tour price.
  • Not all shops and providers accept foreign credit cards. Cash may be useful.

Buying ferry tickets for the trip between Colonia and Buenos Aires is not complicated, and you actually have a few choices. However, one thing worth noting is that if you buy a ticket directly from the ferry service providers, they get more expensive the later you book. This is much like booking plane tickets.

There are three ferry providers: Buquebus, Seacat and Colonia Express. The Colonia Express ferry runs the most frequently at three times per day. However, one way of being fairly certain of a price is to look into a professional guide that includes a ferry ticket.

Many of the tour packages listed here will include a guide who takes you around the historic quarter of Colonia. This intriguing town and its colonial history are rich and overflowing with superb cultural significance and heritage. As mentioned, the historic centre of the town is a UNESCO Heritage Site, and the 19th-century lighthouse rises above it like a watchful protector.

Private Tour: Colonia del Sacramento Day Trip from Buenos Aires

If you’re looking for a slightly longer and more detailed guided element to your tour, this may be a better option. Among the additional landmarks on this private guided tour are the Portuguese Museum,  Nacarello´s House, and the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament.

Although a notable landmark, Nicorello’s house is a tiny stone home that seemed preserved in time from the 18th century. It offers some insight into the lives of the settlers back then. Tip: it is one of eight museums in the town that you can buy a single ticket for, for around $2 (260 ARS)

As with most tours of this nature, pickup from your hotel is included and, provided you are on time – you won’t miss a thing.

What we liked: More detailed guide to the additional historic landmarks

Editor review:
This Buenos Aires to Uruguay Ferry is a worthwhile experience for anyone wishing to tick an extra box on their South American holiday. Aside from the thrill of riding a slow and easy ferry, there’s also the option to take your car along if you really want to (at extra cost). But the best way to take the Buenos Aires ferry to Uruguay is as part of a guided day tour, as it saves you the hassle of arranging the tickets (which come included).

The tour was a waste of money. The tour guide guided us for about 45 min then we got into some van that drove us out of town for lunch for 2 hours. The food was awful. Then we only had an hour to explore colonia after lunch before heading back to the ferry port. Total waste of money.

We chose to meet the tour at the ferry terminal, which was an east thing to do. It saved a lot of money to take our own taxi transportation. All the details went exactly as described, and we hAd no complaints with the tour operator. The problem is: Colonia is deadly dull and really not worth a day
