Whale Watching From Knysna, Thesen Island
Whales and dolphins, some of the most elegant and peaceful creatures in the ocean. Watching these creatures is an experience for the soul. Although incredibly exciting and awe-inspiring, seeing these magnificent ocean beasts up close leaves one in a calm, almost meditative state.
From Platt, in order to partake in a close encounter whale watching tour, you will have to take a short 45-minute drive to Knysna, a neighbouring coastal town.
Knysna is situated on a dramatically beautiful lagoon. Protected by The Heads, this calm body of water is where your trip will start. You are provided with the necessary gear, given a short safety talk, and whisked away by boat.
This is where your adventure becomes interesting, as soon as you leave the harbour, Knysna’s stunning lagoon begins to woo you. The amazing birdlife is overshadowed by the lagoon’s dramatic landscape.
Steep hills and sharp cliffs keep the ocean at bay, leaving just a small corridor to connect the lagoon with the Ocean. This corridor is flanked by two towering cliffs on either side, known as The Knysna Heads.
Your trip will take you through the heads, and out into the Indian Ocean. This stretch of open blue is known to be particularly healthy. It is blessed with year-round dolphin and whale sightings.
Bryde and Minke whales can be seen all year round, while humpback whales can be seen Between may and November. Otherwise, sharks, Cape Fur Seals, marine birdlife, as well as a range of dolphin species can also be seen.
Please note that all trips are dependant on the weather. Poor weather or ocean conditions may result in a postponement or cancellation.

What an adventure! Cruising through the Knysna Heads was exhilarating, but also magnificently beautiful. The little coves on the way out are incredibly picturesque.
