Located around 12km (7.5 miles) from central Brisbane, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the oldest and largest koala sanctuary in the world. Some may wrongfully assume that Lone Pine Sanctuary is a zoo. In reality, it stays true to its name and is very much a sanctuary. For almost 100 years, it has been a safe space for sick, orphaned, and injured koalas that needed a place to call home.

Lone Pine Sanctuary, Brisbane is open 7 days a week, every week of the year. The sanctuary maintains regular operating hours on all Queensland public holidays.
Monday to Sunday: 9am – 5pm

Best Time to Go
The majority of Lone Pine is set outdoors, so we recommend picking a day with good weather.
With regard to the best time of day, any time is a good time to visit. However, we recommend getting there early in the day so that you have the full day to explore. A late arrival could mean cutting your visit short at closing time.

A visit to Lone Pine is very commonly combined with a cruise on the meandering Brisbane River. The sanctuary is set right on the banks of the river (as is central Brisbane), and it’s a perfect cruise-length away.
You’ll board the well-equipped cruise boat in the bustling Southbank area before embarking on a 70-minute cruise to Lone Pine. Along the way, your captain will provide fascinating commentary on the scenic surroundings. You’ll cruise through the lively riverside bits of Brisbane before gliding into lush suburbia.
During the cruise, you can treat yourself to meals, snacks, and beverages from the on-board cafe. Enjoy the scenery from the open-air roof deck or find some shelter inside if the weather is poor.

This tour is a definite thumbs up. The ferry ride to the sanctuary down the Brisbane River was lovely and the commentary was very interesting. We had plenty of time at the sanctuary to have our pictures taken with the koalas and the rest of the facility was amazing as well. Well worth one's while.

We did the River/Lone Pine tour which is a must. The staff on the boat are amazing and the commentary is hilarious.. The park itself is well done and clean, would highly recommend paying the $25 to hold the koala but they do offer a photo op for free which we did both😃 Such an awesome day

A lot more than koalas! Beautiful park. Excellent staff. Koalas and kangaroos plus lots of other Aussie species. You can get your picture with a koala for free, but it costs $25 plus some time in line to actually hold one. Do not miss the sheep herding dogs or the birds of prey. The peregrine falcon is amazing and it would typically take 5 humans to do the dog’s job. Well-spent 3 hours or so.
