Puffing Billy is one of Australia’s most well-known and beloved railways. Located in the Dandenong Ranges, near Melbourne, this 3 foot, Victorian-era coach has been departing from its base of operations at Belgrave Station for the past 100 years.

To this day, tourists from all over the world come to Belgrave station to purchase their tickets and catch a ride on this famous Victorian railway. With the Puffing Billy train still in such great condition, this comes as no surprise.

Its popularity as one of the top Australia activities comes from its authenticity. The railway has been restored to preserve this small piece of Australian heritage, with a specific emphasis on its first years in operation. An authentic 1920s train in motion makes for a novel sight.

There are many scenes along the track for viewers to see, and numerous attractions and activities to make use of along the way. Here, we list just a couple of packages on offer when visiting the Puffing Billy Railway.

Highlights:

  • 18.2 miles on an authentic 1920s train
  • The Dandenong Ranges
  • Preserved Australian culture and heritage

Know before you book:

  • Book online to miss the queues
  • Make use of the luncheon and/or dinner options
  • Special occasions can be celebrated with a themed train ride

Puffing Billy's famous Trestle BridgeSpanning the full 18 miles located between Belgrave and Gembrook, this Victorian-era railway winds like a snake in the wilderness. From the carriages it pulls to the track itself, you’ll think you’ve gone back in time with a ride on the Puffing Billy railway.

Traveling through the mountains, with the forests and farmlands for company, you’re never short for spectacular sights and sounds. For some, this is the best way to see this side of the world, and we’re inclined to agree.

Emerald Lake and Menzies Creek make for picturesque landscapes. And towns such as Emerald and Gemsbrook provide interesting lessons in Australian history and heritage.

With the option of lunch and/or dinner experiences, you know you’ll be treated to a luxurious cabin experience. And, if you time it right, on the last Saturday of every month, you could catch the local market at Gembrook station.

The Puffing Billy railway is one of Melbourne’s greatest getaways from the modern city. Here, you can find a gateway into the past as well as into nature. You’ll also get an authentic “Aussie” experience unlike any other.

Puffing Billy Ticket Prices 2019

A Puffing Billy railway ticket has two options. Departure either from Belgrave ($78.50 USD) or Emerald ($61 USD), with both arriving at Gembrook.

There are also more elaborate tour options available, for those looking to add to their experience. You can compare some of these options and Puffing Billy prices below:

TimesPuffing Billy Steam Train

Puffing Billy times follow a strict roster for departure and arrivals. This daily schedule begins on a normal day at 10:30 am, with finals call at 2:30 pm.

The Puffing Billy timetable is laid out on a yearly timetable and is split between 6-month seasonal periods, only closing for Christmas.

Monday – Sunday: 10:30am – 2:30pm

Best Time to Go

The majority of visitors have agreed that the Australian spring (September to November) is the best time to visit the Puffing Billy railway. This is partially due to the fact the majority of the wilderness will be in bloom and you’re likely to enjoy spectacular views.

This could also be due to the weather at this time being mostly clear, and the famously high Australian temperatures not appearing yet. It’s also not as chilly as it is in winter, which is a plus, considering the open-top carriages.

Travel Tip: Puffing Billy bookings are best done online, so as to miss the queues at the station’s ticket office.

Puffing billy was cool and worth the trip. The bird feeding part should not be your main concern for this trip as the bird feeding is not so large. Our guide and bus driver Dan was friendly and helpful. The tour ends at 1pm so you will have plenty time to spend for the rest of the sunshine in the afternoon. Good arranagment overall.

Graham was our tour guide and he was great! Sanctuary was super cool, we got to feed the birds. Cant feed the wallabies or kangaroos unless you pay extra though. Food at the sanctuary was surprisingly good. Steam train was good. Wish the ride on the train was longer and went through more wilderness areas. It mostly drove through backyards. Also, we never went over any of the bridges. A bridge was pictured on the attraction photos, it was a bit of a let down. over all, good trip.

Although going to Belgraves (where the Puffing Billy is) took awhile, it is nice to be able to visit a place where locals managed to maintain. A good place to reminisce “old school” technology, and people are amazingly warm and very accommodating. You get to be a superstar for a day, waving to all the people you passed by, and yes including people driving! A fun experience overall just expect a relaxing (kind of bumpy) but smokeful of ride, it is old school after all. 👌

Everything went on smoothly and on schedule, aside from slight delay on the train as there were many tourist (not ones from our tour group) confused even though they received clear directions from staffs and a lot of them arrived at Not a particularly busy time of the year but weather was nice and was pleasant to take a brief ride on the Puff. Wine tour after that was fine, lunch was average, at a commercial winery.

We booked the tour through klook and AAT king was the local operator. The tour was fantastic and having Kevin as the driver/ guide makes the tour even more enjoyable. Early part of the day, we had scones at dandenong ranges followed birds feeding and continued the journey on puffing billy train. Wonderful experience! Second part of the day, the group of 40 were split into two team. One who had purchased the wineries tour and one going to the wildlife. The guide had very clear instructions and things went smoothly. We went for the wineries tour and enjoyed our time there. Wish they can include more options such as beer/gin tour as well. Overall it was an amazing experience!

We were disappointed that our train trip was cancelled but we have yet to get our refund. The bus ride to Phillips Island was great and the penguin experience was super. My friend cannot walk that far and there was a cart to take her to the main building and then another cart that took us to the boardwalk to see the penguins. What an experience.

The 3 hours spent at the Sanctuary gave us ample time to view and be up-close with the Australian wildlife, especially the platypus, echidna, Tasmanian Devil, wallabies, etc. The steam locomotive ride, though a short trip, was a wonderful experience! Special mention goes to Mat, our driver, who was both fun-loving and entertaining! He make the one-day trip a memorable one for us.

Sehr gute Kombination.

The lead up was stressfull We had our tickets and pick up time from the hotel, the evening prior to our trip we were informed we had to go to a different hotel over an hour earlier than our original pick up time. Our concierge did manage to get them to pick up at our hotel but at 07.10 not 8.15a.m. This was a shame as the day started badly, we were on the bus until about 9.15 most of this time waiting in a side street for a space to park for the main pick up. Once were did start on the tour our driver/guide was excellent and so knowledgeable. Puffing Billy was an experience and took me back to my childhood. There was plenty of space in our garage so it was easy to look and take photographs. The Devonshire cream tea was delicious but it was strange eating it at 10.30in the morning.

Fantastic trip. Driver who picked us up from hotel. which was an unexpected bonus add on after booking confirmation. The bus trip was informative with the bonus of a fantastic devonshire morning tea of divine scones jam and cream followed by the short bus trip down to the train station and the highlight of our trip the train ride with great views as we puffed and chuffed our way thru the forest. Then to finish another great adventure on the bus as he showed us more of the Dandenong ranges as we wended our way home to Melbourne city. My husband needed a wheelchair and at no time were we made to feel a nuisance as the driver readily placed the folded up chair out of the way during our bus journey. Highly recommend this trip to one and all. Firstly for the scenery, then the novelty/nostalgia of the steam train, and last but by no means least the friendliness of all concerned in offering the service from the driver to the railway volunteers and the cafe staff.
