Times

Abseiling Table Mountain is available 7 days a week, providing the weather permits the activity. You can book a tour for any time between 08:30 and 16:00.

Best time to go

The best, and safest, time to go abseiling in Cape Town, and especially on Table Mountain, is on a clear day. These days can be experienced throughout the year, but it’s best to avoid the very windy seasons (Oct – Dec). When booking your abseiling experience, watch the weather reports and aim for a calm, sunny day.

Table Mountain cable car/hike tour options

Before you can start your table mountain abseiling adventure, you need to be able to get to the top of the mountain. The most exciting way would be to hike. You can choose to hike up and down, with your abseiling in between, or take the easier option and use the cable car. The third, and possibly the best option would be to hike one way and take the cable car the other way. See some of your options below.

5-Hour Table Mountain Hike with Cable Car Descent

Enjoy a picturesque hike up the fastest route to Table Mountain’s summit. This tour begins in Kirstenbosch Gardens, and takes you through the forest up what is known as Skeleton Gorge. There are a few ladders to climb in the forest, but the hike itself is relatively easy. A general level of fitness is required, however, for this tour to be enjoyable.

What we liked: A scenic hike to the summit, with an easy descent in the cable car.

INCLUDES:

  • Hotel pickup and drop off
  • Guided hike

EXCLUDES:

  • Cable car fee
  • Entrance to Kirstenbosch Gardens
  • Lunch and bottled water

Once you’ve reached the highest point on the mountain, you’ll then be free to walk to the cable car. This is the perfect time to fit in abseiling down Table Mountain before you head back to the Gardens.

Private Hiking Tour of Table Mountain

This tour offers you two ways of getting up to the mountain’s summit. You can take a cable car both ways (at your own cost) and then simply enjoy the views and a ready-made picnic lunch. Or, you can rather hike up the mountain, led by a skilled tour guide as they point out natural points of interest. You’ll then have time to explore the summit, abseil off Table Mountain, enjoy your picnic and head down the cable car.

What we liked: Enjoy a guided tour of Table Mountain, as well as a packed lunch before your daring adventure.

INCLUDES:

  • Hotel pickup and drop off
  • Picnic lunch
  • Bottled water
  • Knowledgable hiking and nature guide

EXCLUDES:

  • Cable car fee
  • Gratuities

This is great for the entire family, even if they’re not all joining in on your courageous abseiling venture.

This is a great opportunity to climb Table Mountain. Unfortunately, the cable car was closed due to high winds on the day we booked – our guide, Jeremy, did offer to change the date but this was the only opportunity we had to do a hike. We ended up climbing some distance and then hiking along the contour path past the gorge before going a little way further and then descending. While we were happy to climb up and go down by cable car I thought doing both ways would have been a bit much especially as the track is pretty steep involves a little bit of scrambling and uneven paths. Jeremy was a great guide – helpful and informative. He knew the area really well. Highly recommended.

We had the best guide! Jeremy and Danielle were knowledgeable, had great sense of humor and well edcuated regarding the history of SA, the fauna, the trails. They offered us modest challenges in our hike which was tough but well enjoyed.
