Sydney Opera House lit up in the evening

A heritage-listed engineering marvel, the Sydney Harbour Bridge has stood boldly across the harbor for almost a century. It connects Sydney’s central business district with the North Shore and has become an iconic symbol of the city.

Standing a short distance across the water is Sydney’s other best-known-and-loved landmark, the Sydney Opera House. The spectacular view of it from the bridge is a part of what makes the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb experience so special.

The Sydney Harbour climb is fun and invigorating, with a series of ladders, catwalks, and steps leading you up the inner or outer arm of the bridge.

With a summit reaching 134 meters (440ft), the Sydney Bridge Climb offers the best 360-degree views of the city and its surroundings. It crosses right over the harbor, so water-filled views are abundant in all directions.  Don’t worry, you’ll be safely clipped into a safety wire while you climb.

The Opera House and city skyline cascade into the distance to your east. A collection of picturesque peninsulas and islets punctuate the water to the west, with boat traffic threading between them. On a clear day, you can even spot the famous Blue Mountains in the distance.

The general Summit Climb is about a 3.5 hour round trip. The pace is comfortable and there are plenty of stops along the way, where your guide will provide some context to the views. You’ll also hear interesting anecdotes and commentary along the way.

The climb has become one of the most popular tours in Australia.

Best Time to Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge

People climbing the Sydney Bridge at sunset

Deciding what time of day or night to climb is one of the most important decisions you can make when booking this experience. The day, night, and twilight climbs each offer profoundly different experiences.

Climb Sydney Bridge during the day to enjoy the most clarity for sightseeing and landmark-spotting. The night climb, on the other hand, is a totally captivating experience that draws you into a colorful world of lights.

The twilight option, however, offers the best of both worlds. The ascent benefits from the last of the daylight, while the descent offers nighttime immersion. All this with a spectacular Sydney sunset in between.

That said, the twilight bridge climb is the most expensive, and the nighttime option is the most affordable summit climb. So your budget will be a consideration as well.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb Options

The most popular option for climbing Harbour Bridge is to climb all the way to the summit. However, a shorter ‘Sampler Climb’ is also available. We’ll discuss these two options below.

Sampler Climb

The Sampler Climb allows visitors to climb up the inner arm of the bridge, up to half of the summit’s height. This is a much shorter journey in terms of distance and time, so is appropriate for those who less physically equipped for a longer climb. A round trip is around 1.5 hours.

The views from the half-way point are still beautiful, and the climb is still enjoyable. This option is also the most affordable option, so may be a good choice for those on a tighter budget.

What we liked: A more affordable and easy-going experience with nice views.

INCLUDES:

  • Climb Harbour Bridge to the half-way point
  • Experienced guide
  • Informative commentary and anecdotes

Summit Climb

The summit climbs are the most popular option. The views are unparalleled and the experience is a perfect length. Unlike the sampler climb, the summit climb is also available at twilight and night.

We had a blast with our tour guide Katie! She was very knowledgeable and made the climb fun. We only had a group of 5 and that made it even better. Would totally do again!

Rainy and Dark but worth the experience It was on my bucket list and glad I did it. Not scary or difficult really and I am over 60. Just a few ladder climbs. It was good to have wind breakers and warm coats attached to our backpack as we needed them. No really good photos because it was too dark. Would have been nice to see Sydney.
