Table Mountain is one of Cape Town’s most iconic sights in the city with the shape of the mountain dominating the beautiful skyline. Considering the majesty of the mountain, it’s no wonder that the cable car, Cape Town, is a top tourist attraction and this is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Although there are many trails scaling the mountain, the cable car is an easier way to summit (or descend) as the ride boasts breathtaking panoramic views of Cape Town. Some of these include Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, Cape Town city centre, and even the West Coast.

Depending on how much budget you have to spend on cable car tickets, there are a variety of options available. Here we explore the top options, namely a combo ticket with the hop-on-hop-off bus, a hike and cable way combo, and a private tour. Simply pick the option that best suits your needs.

Know before you book:

  • The cable car is very dependent on the weather and may be cancelled
  • The hike requires a moderate level of fitness
  • The top of the mountain can be chilly in winter, so pack a warm top

Highlights:

  • Summit Cape Town’s most iconic attraction
  • Absorb breathtaking panoramic views on the cable car ride
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of Cape Town’s vegetation

Table Mountain Cable car

Boasting exquisite natural beauty, vibrant culture, and pristine beaches, Cape Town is one of the top tourist attractions around the world. At the very heart of Cape Town’s natural fame is Table Mountain – arguably one of the most iconic sights in Cape Town.

One of the best parts about enjoying Table Mountain is that there are a variety of ways to experience the landmark. The hop-on-hop-off bus combo is perfect for families, solo travellers and couples alike who want to see the best of Cape Town – including the cable car – at their own pace throughout the day.

If you are an adventure-junkie and moderately fit, then the hike up Skeleton Gorge to the top of Table Mountain is a great experience. The excursion is made complete with a well-deserved cable car descent that highlights the beauty of the city as you sail down the mountain face.

If the bustle of the city bus or the adrenaline of the hike is not for you, there is also the option for a two-day private tour that includes Table Mountain tickets as part of the tour. The tour combines the thrill of Table Mountain cable car with other highlights such as Robben Island, a wine tour and the Cape of Good Hope.

Table Mountain Cable Car Prices 2021

The Cape Town cable car prices vary depending on which experience you choose. The experiences start at approximately USD $41 for the hop-on-hop-off bus combo cable car price and can cost as much as USD $361 for the more exclusive private tour which includes your Table Mountain cable car tickets.

Follow the well-maintained path of Platteklip Gorge, one of the easiest ways to ascend Table Mountain. Admire breathtaking views of the city and beyond from the summit, then enjoy a scenic and relaxing descent via the cable car (tickets not included.)

Times

The cable car is only open during daylight hours, and rides are easily cancelled if the weather is too windy or visibility is bad.

01 Oct – 31 Oct 2020:
First car up – 08:00 am
Last car up – 3:00 pm
Last car down – 4:00 pm

Best time to go

The cable car can be extremely busy in the morning which is why we recommend that you go during the afternoon when it is quieter (after 1:00 pm). If there is a lot of cloud cover, you won’t see much from the top, so we suggest that you plan your trip well and go on a sunny day. The view from the top is equally beautiful regardless of whether you book in the summer or the winter.

Table Mountain Cable Car Options

Depending on your preference, there are a variety of ways to experience the Table Mountain cable car. If you are on a budget and want to fill your day with as many activities as possible, then the hop-on-hop-off bus combo is your best bet.

If you want to take your time to enjoy the beautiful nature while breaking a sweat, then you can choose the five-hour hike with cable car descent. Alternatively, the private tour offers an exclusive and comfortable Table Mountain experience.

Table Mountain and Hop-on-hop-off Bus Combo

This tour is perfect for groups of travellers who want to fit the most into their day as possible. It is an affordable option where the Table Mountain ticket price is absorbed in the experience. Available for the duration of one day, the trip bus ticket gives you unlimited access to four different bus routes so that you can enjoy the best that the city has to offer.

The bus offers direct access to the Table Mountain cableway where you can indulge in the breathtaking views as you ascend and descend the mountain. While the bus ticket is only available for the day, the flexibility of the cableway ticket allows you to take advantage of the cableway within 14 days (in case you run out of time or the weather doesn’t play ball).

In addition to experiencing Table Mountain, one of the most iconic landmarks in Cape Town, the combo also includes a free walking tour of Cape Town’s city.

Immer alles positiv nehmen!

Amazing, 13km up to 1,067m in 4.5hrs, supported by a fabulous guide. I ended up with a personal guide up Table Mountain, over pipe pass, up & down three gorges and up to the summit. Lynette was brilliant, she set a good pace which I quickly fell into, we chatted easily the whole way up & down. I had a wonderful morning & still feel pretty smug to walk 13km up to 1,067m! Not bad I think. I can highly recommend Lynette.
